The Varsity Baseball team wrapped up their regular season with an overall record of 15-11 and a 6-2 mark in 5A Area 2. Finishing as the runner-up in their Area, UMS-Wright will travel to the wiregrass this weekend to take on the Headland Rams, winners of Area 4. The opening game of the series will start at 4:00PM on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs by sweeping Area opponents Williamson, B. C. Rain and Leflore before dropping both games at Elberta. Last week, the Bulldogs won on the road at Thomasville and at home against Excel before dropping the season finale at home against Mobile Christian.
At Thomasville,
Andy Purvis pitched 7 strong innings to earn the win while striking out 10 Tiger batters. Colby Weaver and Sammy Davis led the way on offense with 2 hits apiece. Davis and
John Ramsay both had 2 RBIs in the game. A 7-run 5th inning was the difference maker in the game as Davis, Weaver, Ramsay and
Ty Mabrey all had RBI hits in the inning.
The next day versus Excel,
Ty Waters pitched another gem for UMS-Wright going the distance to earn the win and striking out 13 batters.
Jack Blackerby's RBI tied the game 1-1 in the 4th inning, and
Preston Tanner scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the 6th.
