Leflore Game Recap
UMS-Wright won its Region 1 opener 25-6 over Leflore at Cooper Stadium on Friday night. The offense put up almost 400 yards over 70 plays, and Bo Wills gave the Bulldogs their first 100-yard rushing effort of the season. Defensively, the Bulldogs forced several 3 and outs and came up with two interceptions in holding the Rattlers to 6 points. UMS-Wright scored 18 unanswered points in the second half to pull away with the win and put themselves at the top of the Region 1 standings early in the season. Â
1st Quarter
UMS-Wright took the opening kickoff and put together a methodical, sustained drive that put them up 7-0. Bo Wills was the workhorse of the drive catching passes out of the backfield and rushing for 3 first downs. Max Fowler's 13 yard run set up the Bulldogs first score, as Coach Curtis dialed up a double pass play and Bo Wills found Denton Elliott in the end zone for a 9 yard TD pass.
The Bulldog defense forced a 3 and out on Leflore's only possession in the quarter. On their next possession, UMS-Wright got 13 yards from Wills on the ground and were driving as the quarter ended. Â

2nd Quarter
With the Bulldogs driving to open the quarter, Perry Hand gained 8 yards on 3rd and 1 and another 6 yards two plays later. Red zone penalties hurt the Bulldogs all night, and after their first infraction put them behind the chains, Kingston Phan's 27 yard field goal attempt didn't connect.
Leflore completed a 76 yard pass to the Bulldogs 1 yard line, and punched it in on the next play. Their PAT was blocked by David Lott.
UMS-Wright's red zone troubles continued on the next series. Fowler completed a pass to Wills for 14 yards and Perry Hand rushed for 22 yards on 2 carries to put the Bulldogs on the Leflore 4 yard line. Another penalty put the Bulldogs back, and Fowler's 3rd and 16 pass was intercepted by the Rattlers at the goal line. Leflore ran two plays deep in their own end as the half came to a close

3rd Quarter
After a quick first half where each team had 3 possessions, the 3rd quarter was chopped up by multiple Leflore players cramping up and penalties on both teams.
The Rattlers started the half with a 3 and out after John Morgan Davidson's near interception ended their first drive. A low snap on the 4th down punt attempt resulted in great field position for the Bulldogs. Bo Wills had two carries for 19 yards, including a 13 yard TD run to put the Bulldogs up 14-6.
The next three offensive possessions would end in turnovers, with the Bulldogs defense cashing in on the first. Andrew Cook and Jeff Houston knocked the ball free and Caplyn Reed recovered the Leflore fumble. But on the ensuing play, Leflore jumped in front of a pass intended for Camden Taylor to grab an interception. The Rattlers connected on a 49 yard completion, but David Lott ended the drive with his 2nd interception of the season in the end zone. Â
Bo Wills ripped off a 40 yard run, and Fowler converted a 3rd and 8 with a pass to Camden Taylor. A personal foul on Leflore gave the Bulldogs another red zone series, but a penalty killed the drive and Phan missed a 35 yard field goal attempt.
Leflore went 3 and out, and UMS-Wright got good runs from Wills and Hand to get a drive going as the quarter ended.

4th Quarter
A promising drive ended in more red zone frustration for the Bulldogs, and a fumble on the 2 yard line gave the ball back to the Rattlers. They could not get a first down, and the Bulldog defense tacked another 3 and out onto the stat sheet. Â
With the ball at midfield, the Bulldogs lured Leflore offside on 3rd and 2. Fowler, Wills and Elliott all rushed for first downs to get the Bulldogs inside the 20 yard line again, but a 15 yard penalty took away their chance at a touchdown. Kingston Phan put 3 points on the board with a 30 yard field goal.
Leflore's last chance to stay in the game was snuffed out as Charlie Jeffery cut in front of a Rattler receiver to grab his first interception of the year. The Bulldogs put the game away with 3 straight runs from freshman Richard Scott, punctuated by a 22 yard TD run.

Plays of the Game
Offense: The Bulldogs first score of the night came on a double pass play that was perfectly executed. Max Fowler swung the ball out to Bo Wills, who looked to be breaking up the field before tossing the ball to a wide open Denton Elliott in the left end zone.Â
Â
Defense: In the 3rd quarter holding on to an 8 point lead, Leflore had momentum following an interception near midfield. A 46 yard pass play had them driving, but David Lott's interception in the end zone took away their scoring chance. The Bulldogs would capitalize on the turnover with a field goal to make it a two score game. Â

From the Coaches
Coach Dean on the Offense:Â
Friday night was a vast improvement from the previous week. It was good to see that the kids took what we corrected from week 1, and carried it over to the field. We still have to get better each week, and build on what we have done to this point. We are still having too many mistakes in the red zone, and we are working hard to clean that up. Watching the film we were able to do a bunch of different things on the ground because the offensive line was getting in the correct gaps, while James Hollon and Perry Hand did a great job of pinning and digging out the ends to let Bo Wills have plenty of room to run. We have another challenge this week in B.C. Rain. They have size and speed, and we must be ready for the speed of the game from the start.
Â
Coach Koziol on the Defense:
I thought the defense played well for most of the game Friday night. Several of our players played with great technique and effort.  We had a few breakdowns in zone coverage that led to explosive plays for their offense that we have to correct. We cannot continue to pass off WR's and let them run free, so our communication on the back end must improve.  We did create 3 takeaways, with 2 interceptions and a fumble recovery which is always a positive. I thought Jeff Holston, Caplyn Reed and Johnny Megginson all played solid games. It was a great way to start Region play with a win at Cooper Stadium.Â
Next Up: Region 1 play continues on the road at B. C. Rain / Friday (9/6) 7:00 PM
