Game Recap
UMS-Wright struggled to move the ball in the first half on offense, but the defense held Gulf Shores to only a field goal. Field position was an issue all night as the Bulldogs consistently faced long fields to work against. Gulf Shores extended their lead to 10-0 in the 3rd quarter after returning an interception for a touchdown. A late score put the Dolphins up 17-0.
1st Quarter
UMS-Wright received the opening kickoff and
Joe Lott picked up a 1st down on a 2nd & 8 run around the left end. Lott's screen pass to
Bo Wills on third down was not enough and the Bulldogs punted. Gulf Shores converted a 3rd and 4 and then the Bulldogs gave them a 1st and 5 after an off sides penalty. A 26-yard run for another first down was followed by another off sides on the Bulldog defense, and the Dolphins were knocking on the door of the end zone.
C.J. Stewart and
Jeff Holston put the Dolphins behind the chains with a tackle for loss on first down, and the defense held on a 4th and 3 inside the 10 yard line.
The Bulldogs were 3 and out on their next drive, but
William Taylor's booming 50+ yard punt put the Dolphins back on their end of the field. The Dolphins converted a 2nd & 3, then
Andrew Cook's sack put them behind the chains again. On the final play of the quarter, Gulf Shores picked up 13 yards on a 3rd & 18 screen pass.

2nd Quarter
The Dolphins finished off their drive with a 39 yard field goal on the first play of the 2nd quarter to take a 3-0 lead. Jake Jay's 7 yard run set up a 3rd & 4, but Lott's run came up just short and Will Taylor punted. Gulf Shores converted a 3rd & 3, but
Joe Lott broke up a pass on 3rd & 7 to force a punt. On the next drive, Lott connected with Will Taylor for a 6 yard gain but failed to pick up the first down and Taylor punted. Tackles for loss from
C.J. Stewart and
Caplyn Reed on consecutive plays forced a 3 & out. Jaye picked up a tough 7 yards on 1st down for the Bulldogs, but another 3 & out ended with a punt. With the Bulldogs dropped into deep prevent coverage, the Dolphins ran for 22 yards on the final play of the half.

3rd Quarter
Gulf Shores started the half with the ball and completed a pass to convert a 3rd & 6. The Bulldog defense was hit with another off sides penalty on 3rd & 7, and the Dolphins converted the short distance for a first down. On their longest play from scrimmage, Gulf Shores hit a deep post route for a 42 yard gain on first down, but the Bulldog defense held strong in the red zone. The Dolphins attempted another field goal, but this one was blocked by
C.J. Stewart bulling his way through the line to get a hand up for the deflection.
Jake Jaye had his longest run of the night on 1st down, picking up 17 yards. Facing 3rd and 8, Lott scrambled to his left looking for the deep ball, but Gulf Shores intercepted it and Ronnie Royal returned it for a touchdown. The two teams traded 3 & outs to end the quarter.

From the Coaches
Coach Dean on the Offense:
We are very upset at how we came out and played offensively on Friday night. We did not match the emotion and intensity of the game. We are going to continue to try and find out the best way to have some success. We had opportunities for success, but every play we had one or two guys not doing their job, and it caused what should be a positive play into a non-opportunistic play. It was good to see Jake Jaye get back out on the field, and that will continue this week. We are going to move some guys around and get some more size on the field. We have a similar challenge this week with Vigor. They are fast and big up front, and athletic on the back end. We have our backs against the wall, and we need to respond in a positive way.
Coach Koziol on the Defense:
It's always disappointing to lose a Region game. We knew Gulf Shores was a good team with several dynamic and explosive players. We had several guys on defense who played with great energy and effort. We were quite undersized again up front, but I felt our D-line did a good job of eating up blocks and allowing our linebackers to make plays. C.J. Stewart, Luke Lambert, Andrew Cook and Mac McGinley played hard all night long. Caplyn Reed and Jeff Holston led the way in tackles and were solid in the box. I also think that Charlie Jeffery and William Tanner are continuing to improve every game.
The frustrating part is how poorly we tackled when we had chances to make plays for loss. Several times we had players in position to get them on the ground, but we missed tackles. Defensive penalties will also be addressed this week. We had 5 penalties for 45 yards, and we cannot give offenses free yards as a result of our lack of focus or discipline. We will get that cleaned up for sure moving forward.
