In their first season competing in the 7A division, the UMS-Wright Boys Golf Team finished as the Runner-Up at the State Tournament this week.
Thomas Crane was the low medalist after making a clutch birdie putt late in the 2
nd round to finish 9-under for the tournament with rounds of 67 and 68.
The State Tournament started on Monday, but was impacted early and often by weather delays. The Bulldogs were not through the front 9 when play was suspended to Tuesday. Facing a marathon 27-hole day to finish the tournament, the golfers started play at 7:30 AM. Later Tuesday morning, the Bulldogs finished the first round with a team score of 293. Low scores for the first round were
Thomas Crane at -5 and
Witt Cayce at +1. Vestavia Hills High School held a commanding 15-stroke lead over the Bulldogs, who were in 3
rd place. They were also looking up the leader board at Hoover but only 1 stroke separated them from the Bucs.
In the 2
nd round, Crane was even through 11 holes before blistering the back third of the course to finish 4-under.
Henry Brown had a magnificent 2
nd round shooting a 2-under par 70. As the final scores came in, the Bulldogs finished 6 strokes ahead of Hoover to secure the red trophy.
