Mr. Doug Barber enters his 26th year at UMS-Wright Preparatory School. He has been involved with both teaching and administration in the Middle School and Upper School and currently serves as the Head of School. He was named the Head of School in 2017. His roles on campus include managing all of the students and the staff in the daily operations of the school. He oversees the academic program, the co-curricular program, and all areas of student life. He has also served on the Admissions Committee, Curriculum Committee, and the Financial Aid Committee.
Mr. Barber has had many roles during his tenure at UMS-Wright, including teaching social studies and creative writing and coaching many sports: baseball, football, and boys and girls basketball. He served on the AHSAA Advisory Committee for 3 years. Mr. Barber was promoted to Middle School Principal in in 2000 and also served as the Assistant Athletic Director. It was during this time that he guided the school's transition into the new middle school facility.
In 2012, Mr. Barber was named Upper and Middle School Principal, where he took on dual roles overseeing 570 students and 82 faculty members. He continues to serve on many committees. He currently serves on the Student Life Committee, the Personnel Committee, and the Buildings and Grounds Committee. He also leads the administrative teams at UMS-Wright and works with the Advancement Department on alumni relations, capital campaigns, annual fund and marketing strategies.
Mr. Barber came to UMS-Wright after graduating from Mississippi College with his bachelor's in Education. He earned his master's in Educational Leadership from the University of South Alabama, and his E.Ds. in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education.
A native of Fairhope, AL, Mr. Barber is a 1987 graduate of Fairhope High School. He is married to Jana Jemison Barber, and they have two sons. Grant is a member of the UMS-Wright Class of 2016 and Jeb, a member of the UMS-Wright in the Class of 2019.
